Review – TF – CYB – Blurr

So I’ve had a slew of “retro” reviews recently, its time to do something new. Something new, with a retro feel anyway. And so we have, Transformers Cybertron’s Blurr.

Back when Armada was first released, I was incredibly unimpressed by most of it’s molds. They had lame restricted articulation, the colors were ugly all around. They were a bit chunky overall. They just didn’t strike me as being as awesome as the previous Beast Wars and Robots in Disguise lines. I mean let’s see, awesomely articulated RiD Prowl with his sleek Lamborghini alternate mode vs. clunky goofy Armada Hot Shot, with his funky whatever car mode. That said, I passed on Armada Blurr.

I actually had jumped around a bit on him and almost picked him up a few times. The lack of leg joints ended up sealing the deal on him. For Cybertron, several old Armada molds have been refitted with cyberkey gimmicks in place of their Minicon gimmicks, they received occasional remolds such as new heads, flashy new colors, and got re-released as a bunch of irect references/homages to previous characters. These references range from a Japanese only Giraffe, to a Waspinator recolor, to G1 Blurr.

I always kind of liked Blurr. Sure he hung around with that rhyming dork Wheelie, but Blurr was a pretty cool guy. And he talked reallyawesomelyquicklyfast. This remold really captures the essence of old timey Blurr in an updated body. Sure, it still lacks leg articulation, but the overall look of the mold is so nice it’s completely forgivable. The head is definitely the best part. From the little jobber on top to the wrap around helmet, it’s Blurr.

I do have one major complaint though. For some unknown reason, they saw fit to add a pair of huge red stripes down the center of the vehicle mode. Now, this complaint doesn’t really arise from the fact that G1 Blurr has no such stripes, but more from the fact that the red just flat out clashes with the blue and looks really ugly. Also G1 Blurr has no such stripes. They went to a lot of effort to create a nice G1 homage, but they felt the need to muck it up with these huge ugly stripes.

Still the stripes don’t warrant completely dismissing this toy. This is one that should impress fans old and new. It’s a decent mold really (except for the lack of useful hips) and I can certainly recommend this guy to any Transformer collector.

On one last note, Blurr even gets to appear in the show. Occasionally stand in “generic” cars will pop up. The most common of which seem to be a set of differently colored vehicles with a familiar vehicle mode. One of them is Blue, just like old Blurr. I think he may even get a line or two in some episodes.

I agree with ya on the stripes!

I think the retool by Takara really made a better toy than the Micron Densetsu/Armada original.

I love the alt mode and head of this figure. I agree about the red stripes. The thing that is stopping me from getting this toy is the lack of leg articulation. For him to fit in my own person “universe” transformers line he’s gonna need at least some articulation in the legs.

As far as I’m concerned, he looks great (especially with Classics Rodimus and Brakedown GTS) but suffers horribly from being unable to point his guns at anything directly in front of him. (Insert joke about Stormtroopers here.)
